| MAPSNACK
launched...

|
I
am excited to announce born of MapSnack. I and my colleague
Jachym have created experimental Live Linux CD with GIS capability
called 'MapSnack'. Interesting fact is that it can be run directly on HW or as
virtual machine from VMware. The reason to do it was to give data consumers not
only processed data but also basic functionality to view, analyse and publish
them. Moreover installation time is either zero (in case of live runing) or
just copy ISO file to your computer to run it from VMware. But may be it is
crazy ... you go for a shoping and buy an ice cream and you get fridge for
free...:))
download iso
[669 MB] - you can burn ISO on CD and run as Live Linux
download VMX config
[1 KB] to run ISO file as virtual machine
If you don't have VMware Workstation, go to
VMware player to download free virtual machine player either for
Windows or for Linux so you can enjoy running LiveCD on top of your host OS.
Details to run MapSnack in VMware Player: Download both files (ISO +
VMX) into the same folder - named for example MapSnack. When you double click
on VMX file you will get VMware player running and asking you to create new
identifier...just confirm. Then MapSnack enters full screen mode...to get out
back to your host OS pres Ctrl+alt.

Remastering Knoppix...
|
20.03.2005 |
|
I bought my first OS system today in bookshop, it cost me 3 EUR. Interesting
live distribution called ABCLinux based on Knoppix. I was particulary curious
how this would run in VMWare as well directly on my HW. Booting to HW was OK,
booting in VMWare as well (using kernel 2.6.x). Now how to make your own live
distribution with bunch of favorite packages (instead of using those
predefined). There ara many articles refering to remastering Knoppix, I have
used : linuxdevcenter and
tina-knoppix. Now I run my master Knoppix from HDD (using Grub loader
from Debian) inside VMWare being ready for remastering.

Hacking Oracle sqlplus
|
15.03.2005 |
|
Simply
annoying. You know that gorgeous message saying "memory couldn't be wrrrrriten
press OK to exit or Cancel to debug...". I thought that TNSLISTENER of Oracle9
could say something more...My all classical reapairments (like reboot,
reinstall) came to nought. Well I tried to press cancel and see disassembler
complaining that memory around zero can't be read. Of Course ! edx was 0
mov ecx,dword ptr [edx+578h]
I put edx=eax (eax seemed to be valid address) and debugger was
at least for a while satisfied until he reached another address where I have
used similar approach to get rid of non valid addresses...and I was able to
login into my databse ! (but the problem was to do it all the time I run
sqlplus;( At the end of the day I found it was something with ws32_2.dll
actually windowsockets and its LSP. I used tool called WinsockXPFix.exe and
restarted my laptop. All is now runing fine... But believe me, I was ready to
use IDA dissasembler and permanently modify the orantcp9.dll ;) [a good tool
for 'assembler scripting';]

P2V port
|
11.12.2004 |
|
If you are user of VMWare workstation, you may be interested of way how to
migrate your existing physical machine into the virtual one. You may either buy
VMWare P2V assistant starter edition or you may use the workflow for not less
than trying that;) I made successful experimental migration with following
configuration: OS: Windows XP professional SP1, VMware 4.0, 'Image
maker': PowerQuest DriveImage 7.0. Note that later VMWares doesn't allow to run
PowerQuest recovery utility ! (but waste your time and try it to prove it)
1. Make your HDD image by running Drive Image on your physical machine
2. Put the image on some acessible network or external HDD which can be seen by
PQ Recovery utility
3. Configure you VMWare virtual machine for target OS with disk and nework
specs.
4. Boot inside VMWare PQ Recovery utility and find your drive image
5. Run restore (I do not remember the right toggles checked in...I made it in
October..leaving defaults should work)
Sample picture from migration is here
